Family Fun Halloween Ideas

This time of year is just the best, isn't it? Fall festivities, cooler weather, pumpkin patches, football, baseball... I mean, really, what could you possibly not love about October? We're in a sweet spot where we've found our way into the new school year and we're a ways from the Christmas hustle. Let’s be in the moment and enjoy a bit of seasonal change.

This is the first year that our little Zoë has jumped right into the holiday fun. Last year, she didn't want to wear her costume and she was terrified of everything remotely scary. This year is a whole new story, so I decided to do some of the fun things I used to do with the boys when they were little. It's been really sweet to watch our older two carry on the traditions with their little sister.

During dinner the other night, we as a family came up with our Top 8 favorite Halloween traditions that your family is sure to love too.

1. 3D Halloween Cake Monsters

This is such a great way to bring your kids together in the kitchen. We laugh over our terrible pastry skills; it's fun. My boys have never been interested in crafts, but they've always had a lot of fun experimenting with icing and candy toppers.

Try decorating cupcakes or cookies as an alternative.

*Unfortunately the 3D cake monster mold that I used in these photos is no longer available, but I plugged one that is very similar in my Amazon storefront.

2. Preschool Fall Festival

School events are great because they usually have a lot of fun games that both big and small kids can enjoy. I also believe it's a great way to get to know teachers, students, and faculty in a relaxed setting.

3. Neighborhood "Trails of Treats"

Our neighborhood puts on a fun family event with bounce house inflatables, face painting, and crafts. We enjoy meeting up with our neighbors and letting the kids run wild. Check your local newsletter or city moms blog for free events near you.

4. Carving/Painting Pumpkins

There is nothing better than seeing your kids masterpieces on display!

5. Roast Pumpkin Seeds

After carving our pumpkin(s), I love to roast the seeds. Not only are they delicious, but they make your house smell amazing.

Our top three...

"Hocus Pocus"

"It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown"

"The Nightmare Before Christmas "

This is something I love and cherish to do with my kids. I've collected a few of our family favorites in my Amazon storefront. If you have older children too, try having the older ones read to the younger ones. Nothing is more entertaining and fun to read than Halloween books.

8. Trick-or-Treating!!!

And picking out all the Butterfingers in their buckets for myself. Ha!

What are some of your family Halloween traditions?
